  6. This fact sheet lists legislative and corporate attacks on traditional
  7. family values. The purpose is to inform you as a voter and a consumer
  8. so that then you can pray; then act as you feel God is leading you.

  13. "IMPROVING (SIC) AMERICA'S SCHOOLS ACT OF 1994" - HR 6
  14.  
  15. As originally drafted, HR 6 would have forced states to require that all
  16. teachers be certified in every subject they taught. Other language stated
  17. that the provisions applied to private religious and "residential" schools
  18. interpreted to mean home schools.
  19.  
  20. After receiving what some estimated to be hundreds of thousands of phone
  21. calls, faxes and letters, the House of Representatives voted 424-1 to
  22. remove the certification language. Going even farther, the House voted
  23. 374-53 to adopt an amendment from Rep Dick Armey (R-Tx) that says "nothing
  24. in this act shall be construed to permit, allow, encourage, or authorize
  25. any federal control over any aspect of any private, religious or home
  26. school" but that the act "shall not be construed to bar private, religious
  27. or home schools from participation in programs or services under this act."

  29. Although provisions threatening home schools are out, bill still contains
  30. troubling language that would:
  31.  
  32. -remove local control over curriculum and  give it to unelected federal
  33.  bureaucrats
  34.  
  35. -remove any parental choice in schools
  36.  
  37. -promote school-based clinics dispensing contraceptives.
  38.  
  39.  
  40. ACTION: Don't let up the pressure. Bill must still be passed by the House
  41. then voted on in the Senate. Changes can still be made in the bill stripping
  42. out the Armey Amendment and restoring the certification requirement.
  43. Continue to let your Congressman and Senators know you don't want the
  44. federal government controlling local schools.

  77. Will not let customers use religious symbols in yellow pages ads. Policy is
  78. result of Housing and Urban Development ruling that ads for housing cannot
  79. display items which appear to discriminate. HUD's fair housing division is
  80. headed by lesbian activist Roberta Achtenberg who previously tried to force
  81. Boy Scouts to accept gay Scoutmasters. Ban against religious symbols is
  82. spreading to other yellow pages.

  84. ACTION: Write to HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros, HUD, 451 7th St SW,
  85. Washington, DC 20410 making these points:

  87. -religious symbols in ad are statement of
  88.  faith protected by First Amendment
  89.  
  90. -mere presence of symbols in ad does not constitute discrimination
  91.  
  92. -government is guilty of discrimination and censorship to prohibit
  93.  religious expression in non-government publication.

  100. Target will be lead sponsor of 1994 Dove Awards, Apr 28, honoring
  101. Christian artists. Amy Grant, who has appeared in Target ads, will
  102. host the award show. Target's parent corporation, Dayton Hudson,
  103. donates to Planned Parent hood.

  112. EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION

  114. Agency that enforces civil rights laws has announced new rules making
  115. most religious expression in the workplace subject to charges of
  116. "religious harassment". Rules will transform workplaces into religion
  117. free zones (like public schools) enforced by the EEOC and ACLU.  Family
  118. Research Council and other groups are seeking legislation to protect
  119. religious freedom from EEOC.     (WW, Feb 94)

  122. NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

  124. HR 3488, sponsored by Rep Bachus (R-AL), will prohibit funding art that
  125. "depicts or describes in a patently offensive way sexual or excretory
  126. activities or organs;  religion or religious symbols." Similar efforts
  127. last year failed by 28 votes.
